Maxine yawned and stretched as she awoke, climbing out of the bed and padding about Ethan’s quarters, looking for some water. She found a large container full and poured some into a plastic beaker. As she sipped at it, she noticed the light catching something under the bed. It was the aluminium attaché case that Ethan had kept close when she first met him. She wondered what was inside that was so valuable to him. She glanced at Ethan, who was still sound asleep and for a moment was tempted to try and open it, but she resisted the urge. There was certainly something strange about him. The car she had found him in and his possessions didn’t look like they had come from any settlement she had been to. Though he clearly had medical knowledge, she still didn’t buy his story about the doctor, travelling from settlement to settlement. He was just too fresh and clean to have lived that life. He was like a relic from the old days before the war, a man out of time. She watched him as he slept, wondering what his real story was. Would she ever find out? Wastelanders were by their nature, very standoffish. No one trusted one another and for good reason. It was a dog eat dog world out there. She couldn’t help but wonder if Ethan was different. He certainly seemed genuine. He stirred in his sleep and his grey eyes flicked open. He focused on her and smiled.

“Good morning.” He smiled.

“Good morning.” She replied, enjoying feeling his gaze on her naked body. A smile played at the corner of his lips for a moment before vanishing as he thought better of it.

“I’d better check on Rebecca and see how she’s getting on.” Ethan said reluctantly as he climbed out of the bed. “You can stay here if you like?”

Tempting as it was to stay and return to the comfort and luxury of the bed covers, she decided she had better check on Rebecca herself.
